Port

Do you know what Vinho do Porto, Oporto, Porto means? Let me give you a hint, it is a wine. Yes you are right it is Port Wine. Port Wine is a fortified wine made in the northwestern provinces of Portugal. It is a sweet wine but also comes in dry or semi-dry form too.

This type of wine is made in several countries throughout the world. To name some of them, it includes Australia, South Africa, Canada, Argentina, and United States. On the other hand in Europe, only the pure product from Portugal can be labelled as Port.

In U.S. it is mandated by the Federal Law that the products from Portuguese must be labeled Porto or Vinho do Porto. It is the region of Duoro in Portuguese where Port is made from grapes. They then fortify the Port with the addition of Brandy (distilled grape spirits).

This results in the arrest of the fermentation process and leaves the residual sugar in the wine, which boosts the content of alcohol. It is then the wine is being stored and stored for ageing in the barrels, which is stored in caves, which is also the case in Vila Nova de Gaia before being bottled.

You would be amazed to know that Duoro valley was established as a protected region in 1756, which makes it the oldest protected wine region in the world.
