One of the best whiskeys made in Ireland is Irish whiskey. We will share an interesting fact about the origination of the word whiskey. The word whiskey is actually the English word for the ancient term uisce beatha, which means Water of Life.
Do you know the names of the common used whiskies in Ireland? To name some, these are Single Malt, Pure pot Still, Single Grain, and the charm Blended whiskey. It was in around 1870 that the whiskey was spelled as whisky. It was in those days when Scottish liquor swamped the market.
Those spirits were cheaper and gave a very poor reputation to the Scottish whisky. It was the Irish and the American distilleries that added the word “e” to the whiskey. This actually was to make a difference between the cheaper products than the high quality being produced by the Irish and the American distilleries.
These days the word whisky is used to represent the whisky that is being distilled in Canada, Australia, Japan, Wales and Scotland, while the word Whiskey is still used to represent excellent quality product from Ireland and America.
Most Irish whiskey is distilled three times, but so is some Scotch; thus it is a myth, albeit a common one, that this is the main distinction between the two. These days Pot Still and Cheaper Grain Whiskies are blended together to produce Irish Whiskey.
